PSYCHIATRY

At TRC, our team of Consultant Psychiatrists work with children, adolescents, and adults to support a wide range of mental health and neurodevelopmental needs. A psychiatrist is a medical doctor who specialises in the assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of mental health conditions. They can therefore prescribe medication where appropriate and are experienced in working as part of a broader therapeutic plan.

Working closely with TRC’s multidisciplinary team of psychotherapists, psychologists, nutritional therapists, coaches, and specialist practitioners, our psychiatrists ensure that each individual receives tailored, evidence-based support. With your consent, we also connect with GPs, schools, and external professionals to provide joined-up care.

Whether you are supporting a child navigating a new diagnosis, a teenager in crisis, or an adult facing long-standing difficulties, our team is committed to supporting you through your current needs.

What Does a Consultant Psychiatrist Do?

Consultant Psychiatrists at TRC are trained to:

  • Conduct comprehensive mental health assessments (including ADHD and ASD).
  • Make formal diagnoses.
  • Develop and review treatment plans.
  • Prescribe and monitor medication, when indicated.
  • Collaborate with families, schools, and other care providers.

We believe that a diagnosis is not an endpoint but a gateway to understanding and support. Whether someone is struggling with anxiety or navigating complex mental health concerns, our psychiatrists work alongside each client with compassion, clarity, and clinical expertise.

Medication is never a stand-alone solution — our psychiatrists work closely with therapists, families, and schools to offer coordinated care.

Our Approach

At TRC, psychiatric care is never one-size-fits-all. We follow a structured yet personalised process:

  1. Initial Psychiatric Assessment

The first step is a comprehensive, structured consultation to explore the client’s current challenges, developmental background, medical history, and goals for treatment.
For children and adolescents, we involve parents or guardians closely in this process. Their insights are often crucial in building a full picture of the young person’s needs, strengths, and history. We take time to listen to family observations and concerns, as well as the young person’s own experience, ensuring everyone feels heard and understood.

  1. Diagnosis and Collaborative Planning

Where a diagnosis is made, it is communicated with care, clarity, and empathy. We see diagnosis as a tool for understanding and support – not a label.
From there, we work together to develop a tailored treatment plan. This might include therapy, strategies for home or school, lifestyle recommendations, and where appropriate, medication. Families are invited to be part of this planning process, and we make sure that any next steps feel manageable and aligned with the individual’s goals.

  1. Medication Management

If medication is recommended, our psychiatrists will explain the options, benefits, and potential side effects so that clients and families can make informed choices. Follow-up appointments are arranged to monitor progress, adjust dosages, and ensure the individual is feeling informed and supported.

  1. Ongoing Support

To ensure the safety and well-being of our clients, it is essential to follow our recommendations for attending psychiatric appointments. If these recommended appointments are not attended, we will be unable to continue treatment, as ongoing psychiatric oversight is a crucial part of safe and effective care.

If You are in Crisis:

TRC is not a crisis service. If you or someone you know is in immediate danger or needs urgent mental health support, please contact your GP, NHS 111, go to your nearest A&E, or call 999 in an emergency.

FAQs:

Do I need a referral to see a psychiatrist at TRC?
No, you do not need a referral to access psychiatric support at TRC. You are welcome to contact us directly to make an appointment. We also accept referrals from GPs, schools, and other professionals if that is more convenient for you.

Will I be prescribed medication?
Medication is only one of the many tools used in mental health care. Our psychiatrists will take the time to understand your individual needs and discuss all available treatment options with you. If medication is recommended, it will be part of a broader, personalised treatment plan that you agree to.

Do parents or guardians need to attend sessions with children or young people?
This depends on the age of the child and the nature of the concerns. For younger children, we usually involve parents or guardians in the assessment and treatment process. With adolescents, we aim to balance their need for independence with appropriate family involvement, always respecting confidentiality and working collaboratively.

Can psychiatry be combined with other therapies at TRC?
Yes, absolutely. Many people benefit from a combination of psychiatric care and talking therapies. We offer a multidisciplinary approach, and your psychiatrist may recommend other services such as psychotherapy or nutritional therapy, depending on your needs.

How long will I need to see a psychiatrist for?
This varies from person to person. Some people may only need a few sessions for assessment or medication review, while others might benefit from longer-term follow-up.
