Dr Kerry Hughes

I have worked as a Consultant Psychiatrist in both adult and child psychiatry, gaining experience across a wide range of clinical settings, including both inpatient and outpatient services. I graduated from Leicester Medical School and completed my postgraduate psychiatry examinations (MRCPsych) before moving to Sweden.

In Sweden, I worked in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, with a significant focus on neurodevelopmental disorders, including ADHD and ASD. During this time, I also visited Germany and Iceland to gain insight into how their psychiatric services and healthcare systems operate.

I returned to England in 2019 and subsequently worked in both child and adult psychiatry within the NHS and private sector. For the past several years, I have worked at The Retreat York, where I am a Consultant within the ADHD service and work closely alongside the ASD team.

While I have extensive experience across all areas of psychiatry, neurodiversity remains a particular professional interest. I have especially enjoyed assessing and managing complex presentations that require thorough investigation and diagnostic formulation. I am particularly interested in understanding the diverse and often intricate ways in which neurodevelopmental conditions can present across different individuals and stages of life. This is important because less typical presentations can sometimes be overlooked or misattributed, potentially delaying recognition and appropriate support. I value taking the time to explore these complexities to ensure that individuals receive an accurate assessment and a clear understanding of their needs.
